The Sunnyvale area is known for its diverse and vibrant business economy within the progressive, well managed, and nationally recognized Silicon Valley community. It is located in Santa Clara County, California. As of the 2010 United States Census, the population was about 140,000.

The agricultural background from which Sunnyvale was known for at the time of its incorporation in 1912 has been replaced by hi-tech industries. Some of the nation’s most successful business and industrial leaders are located in Sunnyvale, including AMD, Juniper Networks, Network Appliance and Yahoo, Inc. Sunnyvale is in close proximity to distinguished educational institutions such as Stanford University, Santa Clara University, San Jose State University, UC-Santa Cruz, Art Institute of California in Sunnyvale, Cogswell College, De Anza College and Mission College.

Visitors and residents alike enjoy Sunnyvale’s picturesque suburban setting, low crime rate, quality schools and unparalleled parks. Sunnyvale is less than an hour from both the Pacific Ocean and San Francisco and is close to California’s famous redwood forests. Sunnyvale offers shopping convenience and variety with more than 49 neighborhood and regional centers, including downtown shopping and dining at Murphy Avenue – a unique and historic business district.

For elementary and middle schools, most of the city is in the Sunnyvale School District, while some parts are in the Cupertino Union School District and the Santa Clara Unified School District. For high schools, most of the city is in the Fremont Union High School District, which includes Fremont High School and Homestead High School. Some parts of the city are in the Santa Clara Unified School District.

Sunnyvale is served by Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority (light rail and buses) and by Caltrain commuter rail. Sunnyvale has been listed by the League of American Bicyclists as a Bicycle Friendly Community at the bronze level, having multiple on-street and off-street bike lanes, and bicycle-activated traffic signals. For commercial passenger air travel, Sunnyvale is served by three nearby international airports: Norman Y. Mineta San Jose International Airport (SJC), 9.5 miles from downtown Sunnyvale by car. San Francisco International Airport (SFO), 27.7 miles by car and the Metropolitan Oakland International Airport (OAK), 37.5 miles by car.
